Eddie Mullan’s No Clarity

Music For Airports, Buses, Trains…

April 24, 2008 · 13 Comments

I would love to hear what albums my fellow bloggers and readers would take with them on a long journey in USA/Canada. We’re talking two months, so if you could give 3 suggestions, that might get some conversation going?

Here’s my top albums for the boring parts of the trip…

1. The Chemical Brothers - Surrender
Summer vibe, goes from energetic to chilled in parts and then builds it up again. Hoooow doooes it FEEEEL LIKE…???

2. Boards Of Canada - Trans Canada Highway
Okay, this is more like an EP than an album, but it is VERY relaxing, will rid your journey of all noise and annoying people. Turn it up, bliss out!

3. Leftfield - Leftism
Seminal breakthrough album in crossover genres, never fails to impress me in that it can relax and uplift you in the same sitting.

What’s your choices and I’ll add a couple more on the ipod before leaving this weekend?

I shall seek out and sample what fruits you have suggested young Nicholas. Thank you!

Ugh, I think I need a top 6 at least. Add on: Red Hot Chili Peppers - One Hot Minute, Cypress Hill - Black Sunday, Radiohead - The Bends.

Oooo, tough one. But I’m thinking - what about a soundtrack, so that you have all sorts of music? There’s something very journey-ish about them too. Off the top of my head, I’m thinking (maybe because you’re off to the States) of the Oh, Brother Where Are Thou? soundtrack? It’s one I consistently return to, and there’s a huge variety of music and styles on it. Or Ry Cooder’s one for Paris, Texas? Conjures up all this American small towns and dusty deserts. Best slide guitar ever too.

Would have to say something by Kraftwerk (GREAT travelling music), so go for Minimum Maximum - it’s a double album, has all the well known stuff and I never get bored of it.

Last one? Hmm. Don’t know if you’re into jazz at all, but I spent a LONG time on a bus in the States listening to John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme and it was bliss.

Yes, I’m loving the soundtrack vibe- love both those OSTs. I played sax as a younger specimen Sinéad, so Im in dire need of a couple jazz numbers! It’s like being in a record shop again in here, thanks all.

Just three albums? Mmm, you need the classics then.

Miles Davis “Sketches of Spain” - a glorious jazz masterwork, with Miles and Gil Evans in peerless form

Marvin Gaye “What’s Goin’ On - never bettered

DJ Shadow “Endtroducing…..” - I listened to this again a few weeks ago after a break of a few years and it still worked wonders.

I was gonna suggest Boards of Canada too, but I’d have chosen Geogaddi.

    How about
Autechre, Aphex Twin and Venation Snares? That should keep the ol’ noggin amused.

Those are some sexy suggestions. I’m going to exhaust my Zavvi gift card I got from leaving work do on the albums suggested but I haven’t already got.

Jim, I got the special edition of Entro, really worth the purchase. Its so good, makes you realise just how good a digger Shadow is- I’ve left it a long time though, its due a listen on a night train.

I must get some Kraftwerk, a few people have been telling me it just works when on a long journey. Thanks for the pointers everyone!

Dr Lilt and Matt I have both albums on stand-by for listening. Dipped into the Amber one, Im liking what I hear so far!
