
No, the title wasn’t the writing of a blogger or half-baked point uttered by a podcaster- it came from David Tighe of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland, Radiowaves.fm reports.
David voiced his concerns at a broadcasting conference hosted by the group earlier this week. Over 120 senior members of the Irish broadcasting industry attended the inaugural broadcasting conference hosted by the IBI which was entitled “Towards 2012 – The Future for Independent Broadcasting in Ireland“:
“Tradition would dictate that RTÉ is the big competitor for independent broadcasters, both in radio and television but, in fact, new media is becoming more of a competitor than the state broadcaster. Instant gratification is key to consumers and this has found its way into broadcasting through ITunes, MP3s and the internet. We need to be creative to bring the buzz that was associated with live broadcasting back into vogue. The answer is relevant content, which is what allows us to offer a product that internet sites or iPods cannot match.”

I think it’s dangerous business to treat new media as a threat and foolish to aim to make content that will “outmatch” that which people have ohn their ipods.
Trying to get people back to their TV is futile….why not focus on getting to people via the media they use *now* to view independent broadcasting? A more conciliatory tone would work best here, IMHO

Hey Nick, glad to hear your opinion. Certainly- its the resistance to change that has resulted in lack of loyalty to traditional media.
The viewer/listener is tired of being taken for granted and patronised, so why should they stay with the media that openly admits it is only now realising it needs to deliver relevant content.
